In Vedic astrology, questions about marriage and long-term partnership lead to one place first: the 7th house. Called kalatra bhava, the house of the spouse, it is traditionally associated with marriage, committed partnership and the way you meet another person as an equal. This guide explains how to find your 7th house, what is traditionally read there, and how to use it as a lens for understanding yourself in relationships rather than as a source of worry.
What the 7th house represents
The 7th house sits directly opposite the 1st house, the house of the self. That placement gives it its meaning. Where the 1st house describes how you meet the world on your own, the 7th describes how you meet another person face to face. In Vedic astrology it is traditionally associated with:
- marriage and committed partnership
- the qualities you look for in, and bring to, a close partner
- one-to-one relationships more broadly, including business partners and clients
- how you handle negotiation, cooperation and balance between two people
The 7th house is one of the four kendra houses (the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th), read as the main pillars of a chart: self, home, partnership and work.
How to find your 7th house
Vedic astrology counts houses from the ascendant, the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. In the whole-sign system AATMIC uses, the ascendant sign is your 1st house, and each sign after it is the next house. Our guide to the 12 houses of a birth chart explains this step by step.
The 7th house is the easiest to find: it is always the sign directly opposite your ascendant.
Worked example 1. If your ascendant is Aries, your 7th house is Libra. Libra is ruled by Venus, so Venus is your 7th lord.
Worked example 2. If your ascendant is Cancer, your 7th house is Capricorn, ruled by Saturn. Saturn is your 7th lord.
The six opposite pairs are Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio, Gemini and Sagittarius, Cancer and Capricorn, Leo and Aquarius, and Virgo and Pisces.
The 7th lord and where it sits
The 7th lord is the planet ruling the sign of your 7th house. Where it sits is read as linking partnership with the themes of that house. In Vedic astrology, for example:
- a 7th lord in the 1st house is traditionally read as partnership being central to your sense of self
- a 7th lord in the 4th house links partnership with home, family and emotional security
- a 7th lord in the 5th house links partnership with romance, creativity and shared joy
- a 7th lord in the 9th house links partnership with shared values, learning or belief
- a 7th lord in the 10th house links partnership with work and public life
These are prompts for reflection about what matters to you in a relationship. They are not descriptions of a particular future partner.
Planets in and around the 7th house
A house is shaped by planets sitting in it and by planets aspecting it. In the classical (Parashari) rules of aspect, which AATMIC follows:
- every planet aspects the house seventh from it, so any planet in your 1st house looks at your 7th
- Mars also aspects the 4th and 8th houses from itself, so Mars in your 4th or 12th house looks at your 7th
- Jupiter also aspects the 5th and 9th houses from itself, so Jupiter in your 3rd or 11th house looks at your 7th
- Saturn also aspects the 3rd and 10th houses from itself, so Saturn in your 5th or 10th house looks at your 7th
Each planet brings its own traditional associations to relationships. The Moon is linked with emotional needs and care; Venus with affection, harmony and what you find beautiful; Jupiter with generosity, trust and shared values; Mercury with conversation and friendship within partnership; Mars with passion, directness and energy; Saturn with commitment, patience and steadiness over time; the Sun with pride, identity and the wish to be respected.
Why the 7th house is read alongside other factors
Relationships involve more than marriage. Vedic astrology spreads the themes across the chart, and AATMIC's relationship reading looks at several factors together:
| Factor | What it is traditionally associated with |
|---|---|
| 7th house lord | Committed partnership and marriage |
| 5th house lord | Romance, affection and how you express love |
| Venus's placement | What you value and enjoy in relationships |
| Moon's placement | Emotional needs and what helps you feel secure |
| Current Mahadasha | The themes more in the foreground right now |
Venus deserves its own discussion. It is traditionally the significator, or natural indicator, of love and partnership in every chart, whatever the 7th house holds.
A word on Mangal dosha and other labels
Many people come to the 7th house worried about a label they have heard, most often Mangal dosha (also called being "Manglik"), which concerns Mars's placement relative to certain houses. Such labels have caused a great deal of unnecessary anxiety. Different traditions define them differently, many classical sources describe exceptions, and no single placement decides the course of a relationship.
AATMIC's relationship reading does not apply such labels, does not assess two people's charts together and does not score a match. It describes one person, you, so that you can understand your own patterns better.
What the 7th house cannot tell you
A birth chart cannot tell you when you will marry, who you will marry, or whether a particular relationship will last. It cannot detect anything about another person's feelings or behaviour. What it can offer is a vocabulary for understanding your own relational patterns: what you need, what you give, where you tend to feel secure and where you tend to feel stretched.
Some useful questions to bring to your 7th house:
- Does the theme of your 7th lord's house show up in what you look for in a partner?
- Which planet aspecting your 7th feels most like the way you behave in close relationships?
- Where do your 1st house (self) and 7th house (partnership) pull in different directions, and how do you usually balance them?
Going further
The AATMIC Love & Marriage Blueprint reads these factors together for your own chart: your 7th and 5th house lords, the placements of Venus and the Moon, and your current Mahadasha. It is one report of about 1,800 to 2,800 words, with sections covering your core pattern, your chart explained, strengths, tensions to watch, your relationship life in depth, reflective suggestions and the method used. It needs your birth time and does not include numerology. It describes one person only, with no partner chart, no compatibility score and no marriage date.
