Mulank and Bhagyank: How to Calculate Your Two Core Numbers

By AATMIC Editorial · 8 October 2026 · 4 min read

In Indian numerology, two numbers come up more than any others: your Mulank and your Bhagyank. Both come from your date of birth, both take less than a minute to calculate, and together they form the starting point of almost every numerology reading. This guide shows you exactly how to work them out, explains the difference between them, and describes what each number from 1 to 9 is traditionally associated with.

What is Mulank?

Mulank, often called the root number or psychic number, comes from the day of the month you were born. It is traditionally read as a reflection of how you see yourself and how you naturally approach everyday life.

How to calculate it: take the day of your birth and add its digits together until you reach a single digit from 1 to 9.

  • Born on the 7th: Mulank is 7.
  • Born on the 14th: 1 + 4 = 5, so Mulank is 5.
  • Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2, so Mulank is 2.

Only the day matters for Mulank. The month and year are not used.

What is Bhagyank?

Bhagyank, often called the destiny number or life path number, comes from your complete date of birth: day, month and year together. It is traditionally read as the broader theme of a person's life direction, while Mulank is read as the more personal, day-to-day number.

How to calculate it: write out every digit of your full date of birth, add them all together, and keep adding until you reach a single digit.

Example: 14 August 1993. The digits are 1, 4, 0, 8, 1, 9, 9, 3.

1 + 4 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 3 = 35, then 3 + 5 = 8. Bhagyank is 8.

Another example: 29 March 1992. The digits are 2, 9, 0, 3, 1, 9, 9, 2.

2 + 9 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 35, then 3 + 5 = 8. Bhagyank is 8.

Two people can share a Bhagyank but have different Mulanks, which is one reason numerologists look at both numbers together rather than either one alone. In the two examples above, both people have a Bhagyank of 8, but the first has a Mulank of 5 and the second a Mulank of 2.

What each number is traditionally associated with

In the Indian tradition, each number from 1 to 9 is linked with a planet and with a set of qualities. These are traditional associations used for reflection, not fixed descriptions of any person.

NumberTraditional planetQualities traditionally associated
1SunInitiative, independence, leadership
2MoonSensitivity, cooperation, intuition
3JupiterLearning, expression, guidance
4RahuPractical effort, unconventional thinking
5MercuryCommunication, curiosity, adaptability
6VenusHarmony, care for relationships, appreciation of beauty
7KetuIntrospection, research, a reflective nature
8SaturnDiscipline, patience, responsibility
9MarsEnergy, courage, drive

The same number can carry a different emphasis depending on whether it appears as your Mulank or your Bhagyank, and on how the two numbers relate to each other. That combination is where a numerology reading becomes personal.

Common questions

Do I use the Hindu calendar date or the English date?

Mulank and Bhagyank are normally calculated from the date of birth as written in the standard (Gregorian) calendar.

What if my numbers come to 11 or 22?

Some systems keep 11 and 22 as "master numbers". In the method described here, numbers are reduced to a single digit, so 11 becomes 2 and 22 becomes 4.

What about my name?

Your name gives a third number, often called Namank, calculated from the letters of your name. It is usually read alongside Mulank and Bhagyank, and it depends on the exact spelling you use.

Is numerology scientific?

Numerology is a traditional system of interpretation, not a science. Many people use it as a framework for reflection and self-understanding rather than as a way to predict events.
